The Day Jesus Dreads
People all over the world are quite familiar with the Easter holiday and what is represents. Believers are especially aware of the enormous sacrifice that our Savior endured on the Cross at Golgotha.And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. (John 19:17-18)
Believers also know that this was not The End. Jesus rose again triumphant over death as the way to eternal life.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. (John 11:25)
Another commonly know fact is that Jesus was in great agony in the Garden of Gethsemane before He went to the cross. Even to the point of sweating great drops of blood.
And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luke 22:44)
Great drops of Blood
It is often taught that Jesus sweat blood because of His anxiety or trepidation over the pain of torture He would endure. While this is true; it is only a half truth. Jesus certainly knew the horrors He would face as evidenced in the book of John.
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” (John 18:4)
I submit that His agony ran deeper that His own personal sufferings. The whole purpose of His death is so that we may have eternal life. Jesus was in a struggle, a spiritual battle, an assembly of God’s law over the salvation of man.
This is evidenced in two ways. The first is in Jesus’ repeated requests to the Father to let the cup pass from Him.
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” (Matthew 26:39,42)
A Deeper look
And being in agony, (ἀγωνία) He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luke 22:44)
The word agony or ἀγωνία transliterated agōnia which means: a struggle for victory, wrestling of severe mental struggles and emotions, agony, anguish.
The word ἀγωνία comes from the root word ἀγών transliterated agōn which means: an assembly, the place of contest, generally any struggle or contest, a battle, an action at law, or trial.
Jesus sweat great drops of blood in an emotional, and spiritual battle to satisfy the purist holy requirements to sanctify you unto God’s righteousness to purify your soul and sin unto salvation escaping God’s wrath.
Jesus’ agony was a battle fought on two fronts. The first was most obviously the dread and anguish of facing the certain horror of crucifixion.
The second was Love. His singular purpose for existence; to meet the holy requirements to save your soul so you can attain eternal life.
Satan’s Perversion
Satan has convinced the world that teaching the crucifixion death and resurrection of Jesus is a hate crime.
The enemy has even convinced the world that Jesus is not the only way of salvation. In fact, this type of religious teaching is religious intolerance. To the point that even the word Christ should be stricken from Christmas. Xmas or Happy Holidays is a more worldly acceptable greeting on the whole.
Satan has been so successful at undermining Jesus that many religions have incorporated a perverse form of Jesus that better suits their needs.
Beware of Satan’s Perversions or risk rejection and Hell.
The Agony to Come
Jesus is still ‘In It To Win It’. He has not been defeated and never will be. This means He is still at war for that salvation of mankind. This same agony He felt in the Garden of Gethsemane is the agony He will feel on a day yet to come.
Created to Love
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1:1-5)
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. (Colossians 1:16-17)
Mankind was created to join into a loving fellowship with the creator. We were created to love and be loved. You were known to Jesus before time began. You are one of the reasons Jesus sweat great drops of blood.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, (Ephesians 1:3-4)
Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself; (Isaiah 44:24)
Forsaken Agony
This is the very point in which Jesus took upon Himself the sins of man; every person, past, present, and future. Jesus was cast aside, away from the Lord as though God had never even knew Him.
Jesus had succeeded in taking upon Himself all of the sins of the world. All of the evil’s that mankind could ever conceive. Jesus bore upon Himself every vile and detestable sin that forced His rejection from the Holy Presence of God.
This forsaken agony of abandonment and utter loneliness is how Jesus knew, “It Is Finished!” This is when Jesus died. This is what ended His mortal existence. Jesus put aside His Flesh.
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:30)
A Day of Agony
We understand that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. This understanding helps us to know how He feels about the future; since we know how He felt in the past.
This battle for the sinners soul will not end until the Final Day. Jesus’ love for man still causes him anguish. An agony He still endures while waiting for all who would accept Him as Lord and Savior.
Jesus knows the day is coming when He will have to turn away from man; the same way The Father rejected Him while on the Cross. Jesus will have to turn His back on those who rejected Him as their own personal Savior. This is the Day that Jesus Dreads.
