As
stated in part one, this is one of the areas where doctrines divide.
Some doctrines teach that Jesus went to Hell and suffered torment in our
stead. Some teach that Jesus went to Hell and took the Keys away from
Satan. Others say Jesus “stayed in the tomb” three days like Jonah in
the fish. Some even teach the false doctrine of Jesus preaching the gospel to unbelievers for a second chance at salvation. These are all full of partial truths.
There
are even more theologies teaching things that suit their own belief
systems; however, I am not here to teach theologies. My focus is to shed
the spiritual light of a literally translated scriptural truth. In the
previous paragraph four theories were expressed. I'll address these with
child like simplicity.
You
may have heard the statement that the Bible is so simple that even a
child can understand it. This phrase is not in scripture. The phrase is
derived from the understanding of these two verses. (2 Corinthians 11:3)
But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his
craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is
in Christ. (2 Timothy 3:15) and that from childhood you have
known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
The
aforementioned verses teach us not to over-think and add in a bunch of
theology to God's Word. The Bible is meant to teach and lead people to
repentance and salvation through Jesus. Satan is the one that brings
confusion and condemnation. (2 Corinthians 4:4) whose minds the god
of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the
gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on
them.
First
(John 19:30) During Jesus' Crucifixion on the cross He said, “It is Finished.” Finished means having been completed or ended. Jesus did not say, “I'm almost done.” Jesus told the thief on the cross next to Him that “Today” they were going to Paradise. (Luke 23:43) And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Second
Satan never had, nor never will, have any Keys. Jesus tells us that He has the keys. (Revelation 1:18) I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. The bible speaks of some future events concerning keys to the bottomless pit in (Revelation 9:1) (Revelation 20:1).
Jesus tells us believers we can have the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and authority over Evil. (Matthew 16:19)
And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you
bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth
will be loosed in heaven.”
Satan got fired, it stands to reason that He did not get to keep any keys. Understand that Jesus is the Key to Salvation and Eternal Life. Jesus (Emmanuel = God with us.) is the Messiah Key to Heaven and Hell.
Third
(Matthew 12:40) For
as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great
fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart
of the earth. This is to show God's power and authority to
resurrect the body, both Jonah and Jesus. We know that Jonah did not
live for three days in intestinal enzymes with no oxygen. We also know
that Jesus' body did not see corruption in the grave. (Acts 2:27) For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
When
Jonah died his soul did not stay in the fish, just as when Jesus died
his soul did not stay in the tomb. This is a Perversion of Scriptures
influenced by Satan.
The Fourth and Last
(1 Peter 3:18-20)
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that
He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive
by the Spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in
prison, who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. This verse has caused some to preach the false doctrine of a second chance at salvation after death.
The verb preached in the above verse is not Greek for evangelize, or to preach for salvation. The word preached translates κηρύσσω kērýssō kerusso meaning to announce or proclaim to herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth (the gospel): - preach (-er), proclaim, publish. which would fit judgment not a redemptive call. These were believers in Jesus before He died. They were presented with Jesus and His Proclamation of Victory over Hell and Satan through crucifixion on the cross.
We now know scripturally that after Jesus' crucifixion He indeed went to Paradise in Sheol (not Hell). We also gained scriptural knowledge that He Preached (Proclaimed) Victory over Death and Hell.
